Medieval Miniatures

This page is dedicated to my little tributes to the weird and wonderful illustrations found in the margins of illuminated manuscripts in the medieval era. The humanity and humour of the monks that illustrated these books really becomes apparent, once you start noticing the margins. My versions are created using watercolour, casein and 23.75 carat gold, mounted to a wooden panel and varnished. The varnish protects the paintings and allows the gold leaf to really sing, without being confined behind a pane of glass.
